The 20 Marathons
THE CHALLENGE
To complete 20 marathons in 29 days, one marathon in each of the Italian regions.
A total of 844 km, minimum.. I say minimum, as most of the marathons are not official events but runs that I planned out using Google Maps. I am bound to take a wrong turn somewhere and ending up doing few additional kilometers. Nevertheless, my Garmin GPS will have to sign at least 42.2km for a marathon to be considered valid.
SO, WHY?
The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of prevention to fight cancer and raise money for Cancer Council Australia NSW that provides support to cancer patients and has made cancer research and prevention its main mission. Cancer is well and healthy and is not waiting for anyone. Its race started a while a go and now it’s up to us to catch up.
Every donation, for as small as it may be, is a fundamental step ahead towards beating the disease.
WHEN?
The first run will be Sunday March 18th 2012 for the Rome Marathon, to finish on Sunday April 15th 2012 with the Milan Marathon. The other days, the runs will start at 7:30 in the morning from a different city.
WHO EXACTLY?
The marathons are open to anyone that wants to take part! Whether it is for the whole distance or half or just few kilometers. This is not a competition but a fun run for charity. I really hope and encourage people to join me, it will be of great help to complete the challenge. Just drop me a line on info@outruncancer.com . There is no medal at the finish line (if we are lucky there will be some oranges and jelly beans!) but the “FEEL GOOD” sensation is guaranteed.
WHERE?
Here below the list of the marathons and dates. Living very far from Italy, all the maps have been designed via Google Map. I couldn’t check whether the route goes through busy streets or it is runnable at all! I tried my best to find interesting routes and I ask EVERYONE’S HELP to review and propose alternatives. If anyone or any running club was interested to become our hosts or to help with the organization of a run, please contact me at info@outruncancer.com or leave a message on our blog! Status NOT CONFIRMED/NON CONFERMATO means that the route has not yet been finalized and the date not set in stone. Will be reviewed by 15/01/2012.
