The great success of our Guinness World Records in 2017 inspired many to push their own belief of what’s possible.
And for Mark it means, attempting the record himself, in the name of OUTRUNCANCER.
My name is Mark Avery and on March 12th 2022 I’m going to run 265km in 24 hours on a treadmill to bring back to Australia the Guinness World Record for the furthest distance run on a treadmill in 24 hours.
In October 2014, out of the blue, my good friend and neighbour Frank was diagnosed with cancer and, sadly, passed away in February 2015.
And it felt as fast as it took you to read that sentence.
One minute we were all laughing and messing about, passing our kids over the back fence to each other’s houses, and in a short space of time Frank was gone and we were all a bit lost. I just couldn’t make sense of it at the time. I started drinking. I couldn’t sleep. I struggled at work. I became anxious and depressed.
Running brought me out of the darkness, it gave me hope and filled me with purpose to attempt extraordinary things, for myself and for charities and causes I am passionate about.
There’s not a week that goes by that I don’t think about Frank. And now I want to do something extraordinary in his memory.
It is estimated that at least one third of all cancer cases are preventable, and that potentially more than half of all cancers could be avoided through a combination of healthy lifestyle and regular screening. Not getting cancer in the first place is winning the race against cancer. Raising funds for research on prevention, early detection and advocacy is a reason worth running for.
I’m running for my family, to lead by example and to show my kids Lily and Alfie that anything is possible.
Join me and together let’s #outruncancer
